Follow
procedures
in
Chapter
2,
paragraph 2-70 for removal of engine, support frame,
and hardware.
(2)
Attach suitable hoist to eyebolt (1, figure
6-16).
(3)
Remove two thermocouples (4).
(4)
Remove four bolts (2) and pull plate (3)
forward.
CAUTION
Be careful not to damage cable
(12) during removal of water brake
and torque element.
(5)
Remove water brake and torque element.
Place it on a suitable fixture, aft end down. Remove
hoist.
(6)
Remove four bolts (5). With another
mechanic, lift water brake, torque element and mounting
ring (14) from housing (6), sliding cable (12) through
housing opening.
(7)
Place water brake, torque element, and
mounting ring aft end down. Remove 12 bolts (15) and
mounting ring (14).
(8)
Turn water brake and torque element
forward end down.
WARNING
Removing Torque Element
Torque element (13) is heavy and will
drop when bolts (7) are removed. Use
two mechanics when removing to
avoid injury to personnel.
(9)
With another mechanic supporting torque
element (13), remove bolts (7). Carefully lower torque
element.
(10)
With another mechanic, remove water
brake (8) with torque element plate (11).
(11)
Remove eight bolts (10) and nuts (9).
(12)
Remove plate (11).
b.
Disassembly and Bearing Inspection.
(1)
Remove lockwire from six bolts (1, figure
6-17). Remove these bolts and their six seals (2).
(2)
Remove manifold (3) with fittings (4, 5, 6
and 7) installed.
(3)
Remove outer housing (8) and bearing
sleeve (10).
(4)
Using a standard commercial micrometer,
measure and record the outside diameter (OD) of the
bearing journal of rotor assembly shaft (11).
(5)
Using a standard commercial caliper,
measure and record the inside diameter (ID) of the
bearing sleeve (10).
(6)
The difference in diameters (bearing ID
minus shaft OD) must be between 0.003 and 0.008 inch
(0.0762 and 0.2032 mm). If the difference is not within
these limits, install a new bearing sleeve (10).
c.
Reassembly.
(1)
Clean and lubricate parts in accordance
with paragraph 6-58.
(2)
Install new preformed packings (9) on
manifold (3) and forward thrust bearing assembly (12).
(3)
Install outer housing (8).
(4)
Install manifold (3) with fittings (4, 5, 6
and 7) and install six bolts (1) and seals (2). Torque
bolts to 250-325 inch-pounds and lockwire them.
