Section III. T53 TURBOSHAFT ENGINE
2-14. Installation and Preparation of T53 Turboshaft
Engines for Testing.
CAUTION
Ensure that all hoses, engine ports, and cable
connectors are capped at all times to prevent
contamination.
NOTE
Refer to chapter 6 for standard tightening torque
values.
NOTE
Install lockwire in accordance with MS33540.
a.
Install the starter on the engine and the engine on
the test dolly as follows:
(1)
Install three engine mounting brackets (13,
figure 2-10) on the test dolly mount ring.
(2)
Install engine lifting eye bolts and sling (not
part of kit), and suspend engine at a suitable working
height.
(3)
Install three engine mount assemblies (8,
figure 2-10), one on each engine mounting pad. Tighten
and lockwire the bolts.
(4)
Install two each shock absorbers (4) on
each engine mount. Insert one coupling (14) in each
engine mount.
(5)
Apply lubricant conforming to specification
MIL-M-7866 to the starter generator drive gear shaft.
(6)
Install gasket (78, figure 2-11) and starter
generator (31) on the mounting pad.
(7)
Guide the engine into the test dolly mount
ring, and secure the engine mount assemblies (8) to the
engine mounting brackets (13) with bolts (7), washers
(2), and nuts (1).
(8)
Remove the engine lifting sling from the
engine and remove the lifting eye bolts.
b. Install engine instrumentation as follows:
(1)
Apply lubricant conforming to Specification
MIL-M-7866 to the NI and Nil tachometer generator
drive gears.
(2)
Install the NI tachometer generator (43,
figure 2-11) and gasket (44) on the accessory drive
gearbox.
(3)
Install the NlI tachometer generator (69)
and gasket (72) on the overspeed governor and
tachometer drive housing pad.
(4)
Install the vibration adapters (13, 96) and
bracket (88), then install the vibration pickups (14 and
61, or 95 and 85).
(5)
Remove dust cover and install the exhaust
assembly (1) using the V-band clamp (2). Tighten the
V-band clamp to 390 + 10 inch-pounds torque. Install
dust cover on exhaust assembly.
(6)
Install bleed band cable assembly (12).
Tighten engine bolts and lockwire.
(7)
On T53-L-13 models install IGV bracket
(50) and transmitter (56). Connect to engine IGV
actuator rod. Tighten screws and lockwire. Retain
engine screws for reinstallation. Connect IGV
transmitter actuator rod to engine using bellows (52),
clamps (53 and 54) and screws (55).
(8)
Install adapter (84), gasket (75), customer
air valve (80), and gasket (79). Tighten bolts and
lockwire.
(9)
Install gaskets (57 and 91) and
thermocouple assemblies (58 and 92) on engine
combustor, using engine hardware and lockwire.
(10) Install packing (41) and union (42) in engine
torquemeter pressure port.
(11) On all models except T53-L-13, L-13A and
L-13B, install packing (3), reducer (4), fuel manifold (5)
and union (6) in engine fuel manifold pressure port.
